Pigmentation is present in different layers of the skin, some nearer the surface (Epidermis) and some in the deeper (Dermis) Layers of the skin. The reason pigmentation develops is that something disrupts or damages the little pigmentary cells (Melanocytes) in your skin. It can be disrupted by UltraViolet Damage from Sunlight, from hormonal fluctuations combined with UV light, from an Auto Immunise Disease, as a side effect to some oral drugs or even from some topical agents applied to your skin.
It is important to assess the cause of the unwanted pigmentation during a consultation, as the underlying problem with direct the choice of treatment and will generally indicate the level reduction that can be achieved.
